Roman Fluted Concrete Bird Bath

Most full-size concrete bird baths need a 3-foot clearance on all sides to look right. This one was designed for tighter spaces — a 16" basin on a Roman fluted column that stands 24" tall. Small enough for a balcony or a narrow garden strip, substantial enough to look like it belongs rather than like a compromise.

The Roman fluted column is one of the oldest decorative architectural forms, and it works here for the same reason it worked in classical buildings: the vertical lines draw the eye upward and make a compact piece look taller and more considered than its dimensions suggest.
